Intrauterine insemination of sows and gilts

The effect of deep intrauterine insemination (IU) method on pregnancy rate was evaluated in sows and gilts of the Czech Large White breed and its crosses. The pregnancy rate was slightly higher (but not significant) when using the insemination into the cervix (86.9%) than when using the IU (84.6%). Similar results were also obtained when comparing the number of born and weaned piglets. In conclusion, the use of IU in comparison with the traditional insemination method did not lead to improved results of reproductive performance in sows.
