An assessment of the performance of preservative-treated poles in some areas of Ghana

Inspection of various routes consisting of telegraph poles 20-25 years old shows that hardwood poles without top caps, treated with creosote by the hot-and-cold bath method, have given average service lives of ca. 23 years in the savannah region and 18-30 years in different parts of the moist semi-deciduous forest. Poles treated with Cu-Cr-As preservative have lasted for only ca. 12 years, possibly because of a preservative loading too low for the exposure conditions or uneven drying before treatment, or both. The resistance to fire of poles treated with these two preservatives, and of more recently installed poles treated first with Cu-Cr-As and immediately afterwards with creosote, is discussed. Suggestions are made for improving the life obtained with present treatments and protecting poles from the extreme fire hazard that prevails annually in the Northern Region.
