Increased utilisation of lesser-used species - Social and Economic Impact
1998
Kuffour, B.
Ghana has over 3600 commercial timber species in its forests. However out of this number only about 60-65 are currently being utilized commercially. This has resulted in a growing scarcity of these traditional species. The paper discusses the need for the timber industry to move away from its overdependence on the traditional species and utilize more of the Lesser Used species (LUS). The author discusses the need for the Ghana Export Promotion Council to develop incentive packages for the use of LUS. He argues that the increased utilization of the LUS would result in temporary relief for the nation but that whilst the promotion of the LUS goes on, efforts at sustaining the supply of these species should be made to avoid their extinction through the introduction of appropriate management policies.
