Incidence of Apate spp. (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) on young forest plantation species in Ghana.
1976
Atuahene, S. K. N.
Detailed examination of plantation species in plantations and natural stands in 1971-74 revealed damage by Apate monachus and A. terebrans. In natural forests, Triplochiton scleroxylon and Terminalia ivorensis were not damaged. In plantations, Eucalyptus alba, Terminalia ivorensis, Melia composita, Khaya senegalensis, Triplochiton scleroxylon and Tectona grandis were affected; M. composita became susceptible to wind damage after attack by the beetles. Cut sticks of 3 common windbreak and fuelwood species (Azadirachta indica, Cassia siamea and Leucaena glauca) were found to form breeding sites for Apate spp. Removal of debris from plantation sites and destruction of heavily infested trees are recommended as preventive measures.
