The research was conducted from September 1998 to March 1999 at farmers field in Kinari Village, Bukit Sundi, Solok, West Sumatra. The aim of this research was to find out the effective method to control the major insects on red chili. Randomized Block Design with two factors was applied in this experiment with three replications. First factor was mulch i.e. A1 (plastic mulch) and A2 (without mulch), and the second factor was seedling treatment i.e. B1 (the seed were soaked in hot water 50 deg. C in 2 hours before seedling), B2 (using karbofuran (curater 3G) 20 kg/ha at seedling stage and planting time in the field), B3 (without seed treatment). The fertilizers given were 100 kg of urea + 200 kg of ZA + 200 kg of SP36 + 150 kg of KCl + 150 kg of NPK and 20 ton of green manure/ha. The research result showed that the plastic mulch can reduce Thrips parvispinus Karny 26.1 percent compare to the treatment without mulch, but not for Helicoverpa armigera Hubner. By using karbofuran 3G at seedling stage and planting time can reduce Thrips sp. 28.8 percent and Helicoverpa sp. 41.5 percent, while by soaking seed in hot water 50 deg. C within 2 hours before seedling, reduce Thrips sp. 18.0 percent and Helicoverpa sp. 31.6 percent compare to without seed or seedling treatment. Plastic mulch can increase plant height 11.4 percent, number of yield per plant 38.3 percent, weight of yield per plant 34.9 percent and total yield 24.4 percent compare to without mulch. However seed or seedling treatment not influence significantly the yield component and yield of red chili
