Evaluation of taramira oil-cake and reduction of its glucosinolate content by different treatments

Taramira(Eruca sativa) is a highly drought resistant oil seed crop belonging to Cruciferac family for the areas having very light soils. Forage, whole seed, and mainly oil-cales are used for animal feeding. Present study was conducted to evaluate taramira oil-cake with a comparison to mustard-cake and to see the effect of different treatments to reduce glucosinolate content of taramira-cake. Crude protein, ether extract, and crude fibre content of taramira-cake (40.79, 9.52, and 6.98%) were somewhat higher than mustard-cake (37.97, 4.28 and 3.52%). Among the individual glucosinolates, glucoerucin, a two-sulphur atom containing glucosinolate, was the major one in TMC (92%), whereas, it was glucomnapin in MC (66%). However, total glucosinolate content of both the cakes was 45.35 and 47.86 æmol/g DM respectively. Erucic acid was higher in TMC (47.31%) than in MC (33.94%). Other unsaturated fatty acids were almost similar in both the cakes. The major glucosinolate (glucoerucin)and total glucosinolate content of TMC was decreased by CuSO4 treatment (W/W). Therefore it can be concluded that taramira oil-cake is equally good in nutritive value as mustard-cake. Both water soaking and CuSO4 treatment are effectively reduced glucosinolate content of taramira-cake.
