Effect of shade on infestation of chlorophora excelsa (welw) seedlings by phytolyma apecies

The reactions of adult Phytolyma species towards light was studied in the laboratory. In all the trials, adult Phytolyma aggregate under the light part of the light gradient apparatus indicating that they react markedly to diffuse light. A comparative account is given of the effect of three regimes of shade on natural infestation of Chlorophera excelsa (Welw.) by Phytolyma spp. The effect of sun and shade leaves of C. excelsa on gall formation by Phytolyma spp. Was also investigated. Under deep shade gall formation was fewer and the development took longer time. On the effect of sun-and shade-leaves of C.excelsa on gall formation, galls failed to form under deep shade a reason that could be attributed to the fact that Phytolyma sp. Is affected by deep shade. Analysis of moisture content, crude protein kjeldahl method and carbohydrate (IITA Method) were carried out on sun and shade-leaves and stems to see if shade affects leaves of Chlorophora seedlings. Deep shade has serious effect on the infestation of Chlorophora by Phytolymn species. [Deep shade can therefore offer inexpensive silvicultural control of the host plant from this psyllid in nursery beds.
