The genetics of root yield and quality traits viz., ascorbic acid, dry matter and nitrate contents were studied in a line x tester mating design including 14 lines (females) and 4 testers (males) of Asiatic and European origin. The estimates of specific combining variance (_2sca) were of higher magnitude as compared to general variance (_2gca) for root yield, dry matter, ascorbic acid and nitrate content which revealed the preponderance of non-additive gene action. The cross combinations Mino Early White x Pusa Himani and Japanese White x DPR-1 exhibited maximum heterosis to the extent of 59.02 and 56.27% over Japanese White (SC1) and 63.11 and 69.29% over Chinese Pink (SC2) with significant sca effects. The gca effects showed that the lines Mino Early White, Japanese White and Chinese pink and the testers Pusa Himani and DPR-1 were good general combiners for these traits. The per cent contribution of the line x tester interactions was also found higher for the inheritance of these traits.
