Combining ability analysis performed on a ten x ten diallel evaluated in two environments viz. normal nitrogen (150 kg N) and double nitrogen (300 kg N) showed that gca, sca variances and reciprocal effects were significant for all the characters in both the environments except reciprocal cross effects for 1000-grain weight in E1. The parent variety PBW 343 was the best general combiner for days to heading, number of tillers/plant, grain yield, 1000-grain weight and days to maturity in two environments whereas for days to heading, grain yield general, in the expression of high sca effects, all the combinations of parents namely those with high x high, high x low and low x low gca effects were involved. For improvement of crop, biparental mating approach, reciprocal recurrent selection and diallel selective mating design would be appropriate in utilizing both type of gene effects.
