Combining ability studies in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

A line x tester set of 60F1's involving three cytoplasmic male sterile lines and twenty inbred lines along with parents was evaluated over two environments to evaluate the combining ability. The results indicated the importance of additive gene effects in the inheritance of head diameter, seed yield per plant and oil content while days to flower initiation, plant height and 1000-seed weight were found to be predominantly under the control of non-additive gene effects. The significant females x males x environment interactions for combining ability for all the characters except oil content indicated that combining ability of lines vary with change in environment. In general, female parents CMS 44B, CMS 10B and male parents IL-IP 234, IL-IP-238 and IL-M-197 were found to be good general combiner.The crosses with high specific combining ability (sca) effects for seed yield per plant and oil content involved high x high or high x average combiners.
