Effects of Aphanomyces root rot on the yield and qualities of sugar beet [Beta vulgaris]

1. The investigation showed that the internal decay of more than half the root tissue decreased yield and any internal decay of root tissue reduced sugar content. 2. Of the 6 varieties, "Monohomare" was highly resistant to the root rot, being followed by "Skane", "Meguni", "Monohikari", and "Starhill" was the most susceptible. 3. The on-site investigation at harvest revealed that in the heavily infested fields sugar content fell and root yield was reduced on account of less number of harvested plants. 4. Aphanomyces root rot tended to be more prevalent in a sown beet crop than in a transplanted crop. The sown crop, therefore, was thought to lose yield greater than the transplanted crop.
