Effects of air slaking on slaking: Fundamental and experimental study of physical weathering characteristics of the tertiary argillaceous rock in the western hilly landslide area, Toyama [Japan]

In this study, slaking property including the air slaking has been investigated by making the Tertiary argillaceous rock in the Western Hilly area in the Toyama prefecture as an object. In this experimental consideration, it has been positively substantiated that slaking is formed under deterioration of soil structure originated in the hydrogen bond including differential swelling, and in consequence its deteriorated faces are led up to disintegration through an active effect of formation of trapped air and movement. First of all, it has been ascertained that an influence of air slaking is extremely remarkable in slaking, and it is violently generated by interlocking with swelling caused by water absorption, showing the appearance characteristics of various kinds of trapped air. In the next place, the deterioration property of soil structure has been evaluated through unconfined compression tests and shrinkage tests while drying. In addition, it has been observed that argillaceous rock shows normal shrinkage in a domain of bond water, and soil particles come very close to the dense state in its domain of water content.
