"By employing a systemized alternate bearing method, we evaluated the influences of fruit load on the fine root volume, the carbohydrate contents in leaves and fine roots, and flowering in two satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) cultivars, 'Aoshima unshiu' and 'Silverhill unshiu', which have strong, no alternate bearing habits, respectively. 'Aoshima unshiu' had more fine roots than 'Silverhill unshiu' in bearing and non-bearing years. Fruit load reduced root production much more in 'Silverhill unshiu' than in 'Aoshima unshiu'. New shoots, following a non-bearing season, tend to be reproductive, whereas they are mostly vegetative following a bearing season. This tendency is more noticeable in 'Aoshima unshiu' than in 'Silverhill unshiu'. The fruit load greatly affected the soluble sugar contents in leaves and starch level in fine roots; the difference was observed only after harvest in December, especially in 'Aoshima unshiu'."
