The actions of the small coastal fishing boats and the passing vessels in the Hayatomo-pass in the Kanmon-strait [Japan]

"In Japanese coastal waters there are many narrow channels that serve both as coastal shipping lanes and as fishing grounds. The sea area around Hayatomo-pass in Kanmon Strait, for example, is both an important marine traffic route and a good fishing ground. In narrow channels such as these, small coastal fishing boats and vessels passing through the channel find themselves in competition for the available space. There is thus a considerable risk of marine traffic accidents. The authors have looked at factors involved in the actions of small coastal fishing boats and vessels passing through Hayatomo-pass and adjacent areas. A series of marine traffic surveys was carried out which brought the following facts to light: l)The number of small coastal fishing boats was greater on holiday than on weekday. Most of them on weekday were full-time fishing boats and those on holiday were leisure fishing boats. 2) At slack water, numerous small coastal fishing boats made use of the fishing grounds within Hayatomo-pass. 3) When the tidal current exceeded 3 knots, small coastal fishing boats either remained in ports, or ceased operations and returned to port, or moved to sea areas where the sea was calmer and continued operations there. 4) The number of vessels passing through Hayatomo-pas& was a bit greater on weekday than on holiday. 5) The change of the tidal current has no effect upon the number of the most present vessels less than 100 gross tonnage. More elaborate survey is necessary to clarify a relation between the change of number of passing vessels 100 gross tonnage or more and the change of tidal currents in Hayatomo-pass."
