"At present, the mountainous districts of the Chugoku region of Japan are experiencing a rapid increase in the proportion of elderly people and a sharp decrease in population. Accordingly, the number of stores in these districts is decreasing or even disappearing altogether in some cases. Mobile shopping services fulfill the role of providing daily neces-sities to elderly people who live in hilly and mountainous areas facing such conditions. It is thought that the aforementioned role played by mobile hopping services will be-come even more important in hilly and mountainous areas in the future. In addition, it is believed that mobile shopping services also fulfil the very important function of resolving welfare problems for the elderly. We conducted an investigation in 2 towns in Okayama prefecture, where the proportion of elderly people is particularly marked, with a focus on the role played by mobile shopping services. The results of our analysis revealed that it will be necessary to establish some kind of scheme such as a ""Mobile Shopping Service Aid System"" in order to foster the continuation of mobile shopping ervices. From a cornmumty welfare vrewpomt we need to develop a new form of mobile shopping service such as a community welfare-type mobile shopping service"". "
