Establishing the best harvest time to maintain the appearance quality of brown rice [Oryza sativa] and judging it by the effective accumulated air temperature in the normal season rice

To maintain the appearance quality of brown rice, the best harvest time was 1-2 days after at the day when the distribution of water content of rough rice formed the steepest peak centering around 28 -29% . The early limit was 2 days before the best harvest time. The late limit of 'Ohseto', 'Akigeshiki', and 'Hinohikari' was 4 days after the best harvest time, and that of 'Koganemasari' was 6-7 days after. 2. This time agreed well with the range of the harvest time that maximizes yield and 1000 -kernel weight. 3. When the numbers of stuck rough rice were many, the range of the harvest time tended to narrow. 4 . The cumulative average temperature during the ripening period had little utility in determining the best harvest time because of big differences among cultivars and years. 5.The glume yellowing ratio had little utility in determining the best harvest time because of large fluctuations among cultivars and differences in the numbers of stuck rough rice with the exception of 'Koganemasari'. 6.The average water content of rough rice was not suitable for forecasting the best harvest time, although values were close in all cultivars. 7. The best indicator of best harvest time was the effective cumulative air temperature that the value that add up the pulled 10 deg C from the daily average temperature from heading stage.
