A trial study on natural regeneration of Quercus serrata by seed tree method: Occurrence pattern of seedlings and effects of the mechanical ground treatment

Summary A natural regeneration test of Q. serrata was carried out to examine the occurrence pattern of seedlings and the effects of the mechanical ground treatment. The occurrence of more than 10 seedlings per square m was restricted to areas inside and within about 2m outside the crown edge of the Seed trees. The mechanical ground treatment brought nearly three times the density of seedlings compared to the non-treatment, mainly due to the fact that the ground floor compaction followed by the treatment decreased the activity of small rodents, predators for fallen seeds. More than 70% of seedlings concentrated into concave spots on the ground floor. These spots served to collect fallen seeds and accumulate fallen leaves and so finally protected fallen seeds from desiccation damage. Because the seedling clumps built up in concave spots extended linearly at a number of places, we considered that various movements of machinery and its attachments produced the concave topography on the ground floor at the time of the treatment and played an important role in the occurrence of seedlings.
