Effects of preparation factors on performance of fire-retardant particleboard

It is well established that fire-retardant particleboard is manufactured by adding a powered mixture of boric acid, borax, and ammonium dihydrogenphosphate to the adhesive resins. In this study, in order to acquire technical data, the effects of board preparation (i. e., press temperature, press time, resin content, flame retardant content, and mat moisture content) on board performance were investigated. The results obtained are as follows. 1) An interaction among board preparation factors was indicated.2) Fire-proofing ability, strength properties (modulus of rupture and internal bond strength), and dimensional stability (thickness swelling) of the board increased with increasing press time before reaching the optimum press time. The optimum press temperature and press time were 150 deg C) and 10 minutes, respectively. 3) Strength properties and dimensional stability of the board were improved with increasing resin content. 4) The fire-proofing ability significantly increased with increasing flame retardant content up to 12%. The modulus of rupture decreased with increasing flame retardant content. The internal bond and the dimensional stability were improved with increasing flame retardant content up to 6%. 5) The fire-proofing ability and internal bond of the board reached a maximum when the moisture content of the mat was 12%.
