The shamba system: an indigenous system of food production from forest areas in Kenya
1987
Oduor, P. A.
This paper briefly describes the system`s productivity and functioning and analyses its ecological as well as socio-economic characteristics. The taungya system is a method of planting forest trees in combination with food crops. Its origin can be traced back to the 1850`s in Burma, where it was used as a means of replanting teak plantations on badly degraded land. It is essentially a modification of the traditional shifting cultivation, but various forms of the practice can be found in different parts of the tropics.
