Various properties and freezing and thawing resistance of concrete with unclassified fly ash from China

Abstract In this research, various properties and freezing and thawing resistance of concrete were evaluated by using AE agent in fly ash concrete. The unclassified fly ash from China was used as a mineral substitutive for cement in concrete. Three kinds of fly ash from China were tested, and, the fly ash from Fengzhen (China) was selected to use in this research. An improvement of concrete workability is not observed as the result of addition of AE agent due to the use of unclassified fly ash. It is observed that the density of fly ash concrete is higher than that of usual concrete without fly ash. However, when 30% fly ash is used as substitutive material, the density is the highest and durability to freezing and thawing is much improved. It is also observed that the hardened fly ash concrete which have proper entrained air content by adding AE agent is stronger than the common concrete, higher resistance to freezing and thawing. The higher compressive strength does not mean that it would be better in freezing and thawing resistance.
