Humidity conditioning in spaces lined with wood and containing activated carbon

We examined the potential of activated carbon as a humidity conditioning material for the storage of cultural assets. Temperature and relative humidity changes in sealed steel boxes (volume : V) lined with sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) wood (lined area : A), or containing activated carbon (weight : W), or a box with both sugi and carbon, were measured when the temperature around the boxes was changed periodically. An approximately linear relationship could be established between the logarithm of relative humidity and the temperature in the boxes. The slope of the straight line (B value) was adopted as an index of humidity control capacity. The results obtained were as follows : 1) In the case of activated carbon, the B value increased rapidly with increasing W/V for low values of W/V, and leveled off for large values of W/V. The relationships between B and W/V were independent of the period of temperature change. 2) The same trend was observed in the relationship between B and A/V for sugi wood, but the relationship depended on the period of temperature change. 3) The B value in the box lined with sugi wood (A subw/V) and containing activated carbon (W subc/V) could be estimated with high correlation using the B value of sugi wood at A/V=A subw/V+A subc/V, where A subc/V is the A/V of sugi wood equivalent to the B value at W subc/V of activated carbon.
