Distribution of green moisture content and distribution change after transpirational drying of sugi [Cryptomeria japonica] and hinoki [Chamaecyparis obtusa] trunks

We investigated the distribution of green moisture content of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D.Don) and Hinoki (Chamecyparis obtusa Sieb.et Zucc.) in a stand. Then, we examined the distribution of moisture content after transpirational drying for 4 months and/or 8 months in the forest. Major results obtained are as follows. 1 ) Distribution ranges of average green moisture content of Sugi and Hinoki felled in the different seasons were smaller than ranges of moisture content of trees within a stand and among the different stands. 2 ) Thirty trees at least were suggested to be required for the precise evaluation of distribution of green moisture content. 3 ) Apparent density of sapwood of green Sugi and Hinoki ranged from 0.9 to 1.1g/cm**3 (coefficients of variance : 5%) regardless of the sapwood moisture content. 4 ) Decreases of average moisture content of sapwood and heartwood of Sugi and sapwood of 'Hinoki were remarkable after the transpirational drying for even 4 months. 5 ) After the transpirational drying, standard deviation of average moisture content of Sugi and Hinoki sapwood became slightly larger.
