The South-west Mau Forest covers an area of 70,848 hectares over half of which is classified as mountain moist forest. It lies between 2000m and 3000m above sea level. Half the forest that is not moist mountain includes drier and higher marginal maintain forest, high mountain bamboo thicket and areas of cleared land and natural glades. The South-west Mau Forest is one of a series of five forests which together comprises the Mau Forest complex. It was gazetted in 1932 and is managed by eight stations namely Ndoinet, Saino and Keringet in Nakuru District and Kericho, Hare, Maramara, Londiani and Nyagores in Kericho District.
