The paper gives a brief account of experiences of the Extension section, Pilot forest sub-project of the social Forestry Training Projects (SFTP) with Mwethya groups participation in communal tree planting. Mwethya are self-help organizations consisting of (mainly women) individuals coming together in order to solve specific tasks. The approach used to encourage the participation of Mwethya group in the Pilot forest is referred as peoples plantation. The paper presents, a brief background of problems associated with communal ownership of land in Kitui District, the objectives of the people plantations, the group selection criteria and memorandum of understanding, the activities and operational plans, and constraints and achievements.
