About 80% of the IGAD member countries are drylands. The latter are characterized by low biological productivity resulting from scant and erratic rainfall, high evaporative demand and poor soils. These conditions have made nomadic pastoralism the most viable mode of livelihood over a greater part of the region with the vegetation playing an important role in provision of grazing and browse resources, among others. In recognition of the opportunities and challenges facing most of the producing African countries, a Regional conference/workshop for Africa was held in Nairobi to develop a coordinated strategy on the Conservation and Development of these resources. Concrete recommendations were developed which are the focus for follow up action being coordinated. Recommendations of the workshop and follow up activities being undertaken will be presented in the present paper.
