The relationships between anatomical structure and the mechanical properties were investigated for eight hardwoods grown in the Sudan. All species were anatomically characterized using stereological techniques and their densities and mechanical properties determined. Regression analysis was then carried out to seek any inter-relations between the anatomical and physical properties. The most significant structural parameters influencing the specific gravity and all the mechanical properties studied were found to be the average fibre length and the average fibre diameter. Shear stress was influenced by the average volume fraction for fibres.
