Grain yield is the most important resulting trait in plant breeding and it is necessary to identify the criteria suitable for selection of high yielding barley genotypes. The present study deals with perspective spring barley breeding lines during three years with different meteorological conditions (2000-2002). The aim of the study was to analyse the genotypic correlations between barley grain yield and following traits: 1000 grain weight, volume weight, crude protein content, length of vegetation, plant height, productive tiller, spike length and density, kernel number and kernel weight per spike and number of sterile flowers. The number of analysed lines was 45, 57 and 49 respectively. None of the investigated traits correlated significantly with yield during all years of investigation. Result showed that the strongest positive correlations with yield were found for 1000-grain weight and volume weight. Both traits correlated significantly positive with yield during two years (p-value 0.01) and could be used in selection of high yielding barley lines. Kernel weight per spike is recommended as the most appropriate selection criteria from analysed spike productivity traits. Although the correlation with yield was not significant, it was positive in all three years and with comparatively highest correlation coefficients.
