A negative social-demographic situation has formed in the rural areas of Lithuania. Natural and mechanical increase of population is negative. From the point of view of migration, the most able young people leave rural areas and 25.4% of the countryside population consists of older people. During the reforms, agricultural employment increased and in 1998 it reached 21.0 percent. Later employment started to drop and in 2003 it reached the level of 1990, i.e. 17.8 percent. At the same time unemployment grew, income of the rural population shrank, and large gaps between the incomes of urban and rural populations appeared. A large number of farmers could not live of the traditional agricultural business. These persons could achieve higher employment and necessary income by engaging in production of ecological agricultural products, developing production of non-traditional products, rural tourism, and by establishing new businesses, the products of which enjoy the demand in Lithuania and broad. To stimulate creation of new jobs in the rural areas, support from the EU structural funds will be used. The newly emerging rural communities should also contribute to this process.
