Trismegistia is one of the most commonly encountered moss genera in the montane forests in Malesia region. Although around fifty species have been described for the genus (Index Muscorum vol. V.), the authors recognize first nine species and one variety after a new revision. Some species have wide distribution area and high polymorphic morphology (Trismegistia brachyphylla, T. calderensis, T. lancifolia, and T. panduriformis), while the others with local or endemic distribution and little morphological variation (T. complanatula, T. maliauensis, T. malayana, T. plicata, T. spinoso - dentata. For general use in identification in a taxonomical revision, a broader sense of species should be adopted. But such lumping in practice sometimes causes misunderstanding or overlooking of the real status of speciation in the genus. As shown in previous studies of a number of thalloid or leafy hepatic genera and some mosses, a species with a wide distribution area often can be divided into several "species" from the point of genetic variation detected by molecular techniques. In this sense, the taxonomic revision of the genus Hypnodendron (Touw 1971) is an excellent example for future works. There Touw (1971) took a broad definition of each species and synonymized a number of names, but he still recognized subspecies and even "morphs" in each species complex with valuable comments as "Notes".
