Effects of partial and complete ringing in the trunk on overallnutrient status of peach (Prunus persica Batsch. cv. `Hikawahakuho')trees were examined by using one-year-old trees. The partial ringingcomprised removal of 2 cm length bark and remaining 2 mm stripwhereas complete ringing no remaining strip. Organic (sugar andstarch) and inorganic nutrient content in leaves, stems and rootswere monitored for eight weeks after ringing. The treatment reducedoverall reduction in sugar and starch content in all plant parts. Eachsugar component also showed similar trends. The N and Ca content inthe above ground parts were lower in the ringed plants than controlbut the reverse was true in the roots. On the other hand, P, K andMg content in all plant parts were declined by the treatment. Partialringing prevented the translocation of 13C-photosynthates from theabove ground parts to roots although entire inhibition was apparentin the complete ringing. Such reduction in energy sources of theroots seemed to affect overall plant nutrition which leads to smallsized trees.
