The present study is concerned with the effect of carbon and nitrogensources on the production of xylanase by a chemically mutated strain ofAspergillus niger GCBCX-20. Different carbon and nitrogen sources were testedfor the production of xylanase. The production of enzyme was found to bemaximum (280 U/ml) when 2.5% wheat bran with 0.5% starch were used in thefermentation medium. The enzyme production was significantly improved (300U/ml) when fermentation medium was supplemented with 0.25% urea. Theoptimum period of fermentation and incubation temperature were 48 h and 30degree C respectively.
