In a field study conducted from 2000-02 was estimated a suitability of new hybrid and open pollinated cultivars of leek for early growing under flat covers of non-woven polypropylene, perforated polyethylene film, or double sheeting: non-woven polypropylene as a bottom layer and perforated polyethylene film as a top one. The results of the study showed that hybrid cultivars Carlton F1, Norton F1, and Roxton F1 produced yields similar to each other, but significantly higher that open pollinated ones. Among the tested cultivars Roxton F1 and Albana showed the best response when growing under flat covers, while little effects were observed in growing Norton F1 and Varna. Perforated film appeared to be the most favorable cover for leeks in early production, providing a higher yield of the crop in comparison with non-woven polypropylene and double sheets of these materials
