Generative propagation of Harlequin flower (Sparaxis tricolor (Curt) Ker. Gawl)

An investigation on Harlequin flower (Sparaxis tricolor (Curt) Ker. Gawl) seed germination under covers was carried out in the years 1999-01. The seeds were sown in multiple pots filled with substrate. The number of days from sowing to the beginning of germination, the length of the germination period, and the germination capacity were determined. The determinations concerned the germination capacity depending on age (seeds being sown every four week during 27 months), the size of seeds (from 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm), the temperature of seed storage (5, 10, 15 and 20 deg C), and soaking seeds prior to sowing (for 6, 12, 18, and 24 h), and the depth of sowing (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 cm). The capacity of germination of Harlequin flower seeds stored for 27 months at 20 deg C did not drop below 60 percent. Seeds 2.5 mm in diameter showed the highest germination capability, while the poorest one was observed for the smallest seeds. The best germination was found in the case of seeds kept at 10 deg C or 15 deg C. The soaking of the seeds in water prior to sowing or the depth of sowing did not affect their germination capacity
