Major genes controlling spikelet number per panicle in rice

The inheritance of spikelets panicle¯¹, spikelets primary branch¯¹, and spikelets secondary branch¯¹ was studied in the cross IR58025A/R704. The F2 distribution for each of these characters gave a good fit with a 63 low:1 high ratio. These results indicated that three independent loci with complete dominance were involved in each case and that the dominant allele at each locus produced a similarly low number of spikelets without a cumulative effect. The three characters showed a highly significant correlation with one another, indicating that the same three loci may be involved in pleiotropic control of the three characters.
