Reproductive barriers between japonica and indica crosses

In a cross between japonica and indica rice cultivars, several segregation distortions caused by many kinds of reproductive barriers were observed in the progenies. We developed a new method for mapping all kinds of reproductive barriers. This is the first report of a genome-wide survey of all reproductive barriers. Reproductive barriers were analyzed in three crosses: Nipponbare/Kasalath (NK), FL087/Dao Ren Qiao (FD), and FL1007/Kinandang Puti (FK). The frequency of each allele in the whole genome was well explained by the number of reproductive barriers: 33 in NK, 32 in FD, and 37 in FK. Considering the position and whether they were gametophytic or zygotic, at least 84 out of 102 barriers detected in the three crosses were at different loci. There is no common barrier in the three crosses. The reproductive barriers between japonica and indica rice detected in this study have probably developed after differentiation of cultivars into japonica and indica.
