Efficacy of the systemic fungicide Raxil 2; WS (Tebuconazole) to control covered kernel smut in sorghum

The contact fungicide, Thiram, has been used since the early fifties a gainst covered and loose smuts of sorghum. It is the only product used as dry powder seed dressing in commercial sorghum production. Products of different mode of actions against the disease are needed. Systemic seed dressing fungicides used in sorghum are limited to some parts of the irrigated sector. In this trial, the efficacy of the systemic fungicide Raxil 2; WS was evaluated against covered kernel smut of sorghum at Gezira and Gedarif states in season 2001-02 and 2002-03. The product was tested at 1,2 and 3 g/kg seed on sorghum seeds inoculated with the spores of the causal fungus at the rate of 2g/kg seeds. Fernasan D 50; DP (containing 25; the contact fungicide Thiram) and Vincit 5; FS (two systemic fungicides combination) were used at the recommended rates for comparison. The product at the three rates tested resulted in 98.5; to 100; disease control. Raxil at all rates tested at both locations significantly increased grain yield over the untreated control and gave comparable yields to those obtained by the standard treatments The product at all tested rates did not affect either seed germination or crop emergence. Raxil 2; WS was recommended at the rate of 3g/kg seed (equivalent to 0.06g.a.i./kg seeds) for the control of covered smut of sorghum
