Sudan comprises 250 million ha, extending over different climatic zones, from the desert zone in the north to the humid zone in the south. The total cultivable land in Sudan amounts to 87 million ha, about 20 of which is under rain-fed agriculture. Gedaref State stretches over three of these zones, namely the arid, the semi-arid and the dry monsoon. The State comprises the largest portion of the rain-fed agriculture, particularly the mechanized farming for rain-fed sorghum, sesame and short-staple cotton. Like the rest of many parts of Sudan, Gedaref State has been badly affected by the drought spells that hit the country during the past three decades. This resulted in marked desertification, land degradation and yield deterioration particularly in the northern parts of the State. This paper aims at highlighting a proposed plan of action for scientific research on combating desertification and land degradation and to guarantee higher yields in Gedaref State
