Laying duck raising practices, problems and needs for technical knowledge of farmers in three provinces in the central region of Thailand

Objectives of this research were to study the laying duck raising system, and identify problems and technical knowledge needed of farmers in three provinces in the central region of Thailand. Eighty one laying duck raisers who raised at least 1,000 ducks were studied. Seventy four percent of farmers raised ducks as their major occupation. An averaging of 3,057 were raised all year round and most of them were raised under confined system. Khaki Campbell breed predominated the population. Moreover, 46.9 percent of farmers integrated with freshwater fish culture. Problems were the price of feed, the price of the duckling and the price of the eggs. Farmers needed to gain a high level of technical knowledge concerning duck disease prevention and treatment. Neither period of experience nor number of ducks showed significantly effect on the technical knowledge needed (P0.05). However, there is a highly significant differences (P0.01) in technical knowledge needed between those who raised ducks as their major occupation and those who raised ducks as their supplementary income. Technical knowledges needed were in the areas of duck reproduction and breeding, feed and feeding, housing and equipment, and marketing.
