Chromosome of five species of cyprinid fishes, namely, Cirrhina microlepis, Leptobarbus hoevenii, Labiobarbus spiropleura, Barbodes schwanenfelii, and Barbodes gonionotus, from Thailand were observed. The chromosome numbers and karyotypes are as follows: C. microlepis: 2n=50, 11m+4sm+4st+6t pairs; L. hoevenii: 2n=50, 14m+3sm+1st+7t pairs; L. spiropleura: 2n=50, 17m+2sm+1st+5t pairs; B. schwanenfeldii: 2n=50, 14m+2sm+1st+8t pairs; B. gonionotus: 2n=50, 8m+4sm+13t pairs. The chromosome numbers and karyotypes of C. microiepis, L. hoevenii and L. spiropleura are new to science. These cytogenetic data are useful for cytotaxonomy and evolutionary relationship of fishes.
