Role of succession on soil and water losses at Phu Phan Royal Development Study Center, Sakon Nakhon

Study of the role of succession on soil and water losses was conducted at the Phu Phan Royal Development study Center, Sakon Nakhon, in 1993-1998 by using experimental plot of 2 x 10 m in size on 10-12 percent of slope in mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest and bare fallow. It revealed that the species composition in mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest and bare fallow were at least 27, 28 and 18 species with the above ground biomass of 140.706-197.782, 83.980-123.408 and 0.00-6.176 ton/ha respectively. For the soil loss, it found that soil loss from bare fallow gave the highest value while soil losses from mixed deciduous forest gave the lowest value which coincided to the results to rainfall which were analyzed by employing power function. Coefficient of determination between rainfall and soil loss in mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest and bare fallow were 0.6469 and 0.70 35, 0.6616, and between rainfall and water loss were 0.7623 and 0.6238 and 0.781 respectively.
