Recent and rapid progress achieved worldwide on the use of r-DNA technology has led to the necessity of establishing a regulatory mechanism especially the biosafety guideline, both for laboratory and field trials and releases. Such a guideline has been developed in most developed and some developing countries with the view to help promote good practices and RandD activities and progress on the utilization of r-DNA technology. In Thailand, the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NCGEB) has developed a "Biosafety Guideline" in 1992 with an overall objective to enhance the development of such technology within the country as well as to prepare a ground for institutional collaboration and cooperation within the region and on an international scale.
