Development of spiral separator for grain

Objectives of the study were to design, assemble and test the capacity of a grain spiral separator. the study conducted at Department of Agriculture Mechanization, Faculty of Agriculture at Bangpra Rajamangala Institute of Technology, Sriracha, Chonburi. In the study 4 kinds of grains rough rice, corn, soy bean and mung bean were used. It was found that the spiral seperator which consisted of inner and outer helix and could seperate materials on the basis of their shapes. The round elements picked up speed as their rolled down the helix until then cencrifugal force was sufficient to cause them to roll up and over the edge, where as the unround elements rolled in the inner helix. The design of helix slope of 30 degree and the helix lift angle of 60 degree could help free flowing of the grain. Rough rice don't roll up and over the edge. It was also found that the capacity of the grain spiral seperator was 22-667 kg/hr depending on the size of the feed opener and the characteristics of grain. Its efficiency decreased while the capacity increased for rough rice, soybean and mungbean , but on the contrary, its efficiency increased while the capacity increased for corn.
