The treatment of urinary incontinence problem in spayed bitches with colposuspension technique in nine dogs

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of colposuspension technique for the treatment of urinary incontinence problem in neutered bitches. Surgical cranial traction techniques like colposuspension provides enough intra-abdominal pressure on bladder neck to maintain urine storage with cranial repositioning of lower urinary tract. Colposuspension was performed in 9 neutered bitches in different breeds and ages, which was presented to our clinic with intermitant urinary incontinence problem. All cases became continent postoperatively, and monitored closely with monthly phone calls. Recurrent urinary incontinence was observed in case number 1 in postoperative 13. month, and in case number 4 in postoperative 11. month. In case number 1 colposuspension was performed again, and phenylpropanolamine HCl treatment was started in case number 4. In this study, improvement in urinary control was achieved with colposuspension technique in all cases, but long term evaluation of the cases, and phenypropanolamine HCl addition to the treatment in order to have the best urinary control was found necessary due to the loss of effectiveness of cranial traction of lower urinary tract
