Utilization of oil palm kernel meal in Bigoui diets

Analysis of oil palm kernel meal indicated similar protein, fat and nitrogen free extract content to rice bran. An experiment was conducted to substitute oil palm kernel meal for rice bran in diets at ratios of 10, 20 and 30 percent. Four treatment groups with four replicates of 500 big oui fingerlings with an initial weight of 1.92 gm/fish were stocked in 16 individual 3.3 cubic m concrete tanks. A flow through water system was used for each tank. Duration of the experiment was 12 weeks. Analysis of the experimental results indicated substitution of oil palm kernel meal for 20 percent of the diet gave the highest yield. Substitution of 30 percent oil palm kernel meal gave the next highest yield with control diet and oil palm kernel meal 10 percent next. Survival rate of all oil palm kernel meal treatments higher than control diet. Water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, hardness, alkalinity, pH and temperature) did not differ between treatments. All diets had lower conversion rates and lower costs than the control diet. The least cost ration was 20 percent oil palm kernel meal.
