Aspergillus flavus infection and aflatoxin contamination of maize in Thailand

For the clarifying of Aspergillus flavus infection routes to maize, the sampling sites were set up in the north and central maize production areas. Air, soil and maize samples were collected from the maize fields, farmers' cribs, middlemens' warehouses and a silo for the microbiological study and aflatoxin analysis. High population of A. flavus was observed in the soil from maize fields and dust in both farmer's cribs and middlemens' warehouses. However, freshly harvested ear maize and grain maize were rather cleaner than that of the long term stored maize. A. flavus density in the air nearby the working shelling machines was very suspected as one of the main routes for A. flavus infection. Although many variations of aflatoxin content were observed in maize, shelled maize (grain), is usually much contaminated with A. flavus and aflatoxin as comapared to ear maize. Regional differences were not found in A. flavus and aflatoxin contamination.
