Analysis of the relation between mechanical damage to kernel, machinery design, operational condition and moisture content

Seven types of shelling cylinder having different features namely plate tooth type (P), plate tooth with tangential flow (TP), plate tooth with close clearance type (PC), spike tooth (S), rasp-bar type (R), square tooth (Sq) and its square tooth with close clearance type (SqC), were investigated on their shelling performance. Ratio of broken kernel increased as the peripheral speed of shelling tooth increased and as the level of kernel moisture content increased. Types of shelling tooth showed comparatively low effect on breakage ratio. Effect on unshelled kernel was more difficult to analyze because of testing error. Nevertheless all factors cylinder types, cylinder speed and kernel moisture content showed significant effect. Concave clearance had an effect that wider clearance resulted in less breakage and more unshelled kernels.
