Production and demand of bamboo caterpillar in Thailand

Study was aimed at investigating the quantity, marketing, and demand of bamboo caterpillar consumption in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lumpang, and Phayao Province. The data of the present study were collected by inventory in natural bamboo forests, interviewing the farmer who collected and sold the bamboo caterpillar. The raw bamboo caterpillar and the fried one was collected and analyzed the nutrition value in the laboratory. The results of the study found that the average number of bamboo caterpillar per clump were 116.46. The number of bamboo caterpillar were 1,683.4 tons from 31.2 million clump of bamboo in upper part of northern. The price of living or boiled bamboo caterpillar per kilogram was 70-200 baht when buy from the collector directly, but 120-400 baht when buying from the local market. The price of fried bamboo caterpillar was 450-1,200 baht per kilogram. However, the market price of both living or boiled bamboo caterpillar and the fried one was depended on the season and the source of bamboo caterpillar. The total consumption of bamboo caterpillar was 87.8 tons. The analysis caterpillar consist of 34.67 percent of protein, 43.91 percent of lipid, and 6,892.69 calorie of energy. The analysis of fried bamboo caterpillar consist 31.52 percent of protein, 51.36 percent of lipid, and 7,419.03 calorie of energy.
