1994
Jonathan Timberlake | Forestry Commission
The Kalahari sand woodland cover around 42,000 square km of nortt western Zimbabwe, about 11% of the country. Much of this area is characterised by dense woodland 8 to 14 m high dominated by Baikiaea plurijuga (Zambezi Teak) or Brachystegia spiciformis (igonde or msasa), interspersed with broad grassy vleis or pans. Many woodlands have been exploited in the past for comercial timber and for cattle grazing, but today wildlife utilization (hunting safaris, game viewing, National Parks etc.I is the predominant land use.
