Effect of lead on the concentration of some essential elements in sunflower and amaranth

Non-essential heavy metals, like lead (Pb), directly and indirectly influence almost all physiological processes in plants. In this paper the effect of non-toxic concentration of Pb on Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn as well as Pb concentrations in leaves, stems and roots of sunflower and amaranth was studied. Plants were grown in semi-controlled conditions, in water cultures. Lead had different impact on Mg and Mn in sunflower and amaranth, it significantly changed Cu and Zn content only in amaranth and it effected in the same manner Ca and Fe concentrations in both plant species. Concentrations of essential metals in amaranth were more affected by Pb than in sunflower.
