Extra low frequency (ELF) electric fields were examined as both possible stress factors and a means of intercellular communication in multicellular and unicellular organisms, using prokaryotic (bacterium Bacillus sp. and cyanobacterium Nostoc sp.) and eukaryotic cell cultures (mould Penicillium sp., yeast Schizosaccharomyces and human peripheral blood lymphocytes). Possible adverse biological effects of ELF electric fields were examined using 50 Hz (European power frequency) fields, while the original endogenous fields emanating from the experimental cells were used for testing the importance of these fields in cell-to-cell communication processes. The results show different biological effects caused by 50 Hz electric fields within all biological models we used, and also a protective effect of endogenous electric fields from human blood donor on viability of his own lymphocytes.
